The original committee members were organized from those who indicated a specific interest
in the project and who had familial ties to the area. These charter members included:
Joe D’Alessandro
(president), Lorraine Perry D’Alessandro (Joe’s mother), Evelyn Nordeste
(Lorraine’s sister), together with Tony Dutra, Dolores Silva Greenslate, Lionel Rocha
Holmes, Clarence Nevis (all descendants of Pocket pioneer families), Aileen Alves Gage (a
Placer County area Portuguese descendant), Clarence Machado (Portuguese settlers of the
downtown Sacramento area), Grace Rose (a descendant of Portuguese who settled in
Clarksburg. Yolo County), and Gregg Campbell (a professor at CSU-Sacramento who had
collaborated with Mr. D’Alessandro on a documentary film about the
Portuguese-Japanese connection in the Pocket).
